Acquired by Merlin Cinema in August 2019, the former BHS (British Home Stores) department store will feature 13 screens, making it the largest multiplex in Devon. Due to the Covid 19 pandemic, development of the building has been slow. However with plans for a restaurant and ice cream bar on the ground floor, there are hopes the cinema will revive the area. The Central Cinema (former Theatre Royal/Odeon) also operated by Merlin Cinemas closed on March 16, 2022 (it has its own page on Cinema Treasures).
The new Merlin Cinema Multiplex, to be known as the New Central Cinema opened 3-screens on 15th April 2022. Another 10-screens are planned in the development.
