Located in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, on what at the time was Mill Lane. The Plaza Cinema was opened on 29th December 1939, as construction was well advance when World War II commenced in September of that year. It was designed by noted cinema architect Charles J. McNair and was operated by A.B. King. The proscenium was 39ft wide and it was equipped with a Western Electric(WE) sound system. It was equipped with CinemaScope in the mid-1950’s and became the main cinema in town to see the ‘big’ films, such as “South Pacific” & “Oklahoma”.
The Plaza Cinema was closed on 10th January 1971. It was purchased by the council to enable road widening and was demolished and an extension to the Marks and Spencer store was built on the site.
