Downtown Thomas, Oklahoma had been served for about 25 years by its Palace Theatre in the Jessie Parker Building and the Princess Theatre prior to it. Local Dentist, Dr. W.O. Young, who was active with the Palace Theatre, decided the time was right for a new theatre and he fashioned one in the Parks Building. The Young Theatre opened May 14, 1940 with Wallace Beery in “The Man From Dakota”. The former New Palace Theatre became a furniture store.
Under new operators, the Young Theatre was briefly listed as the C. & F. Theatre followed by a long run as the Lyn Theatre. Dick and Alyce Frans closed the the theatre on August 26, 1961 with the last advertised show as “Foxhole in Cairo” starring James Robertson Justice. The theatre staged an unlikely comeback as the Mel Theatre closing early in the video age. The theatre was retrofitted for other retail purposes and the building was still in use in the 2020’s.
