The Newport Plaza Theatre was opened by Automated Theatres of America on July 5, 1970 with James Franciscus in “Beneath the Planet of the Apes” showing on both screens, presented on 16mm film. Cinema I had 334-seats and Cinema II had 327-seats and had a staff of 4 persons: a manager, a projectionist, a girl selling tickets and confectionary and a porter. Automated Theatres of America went bankrupt in 1971.
It was reopened by General Cinema on August 11, 1972. It was closed in 1981. A chiropractor and an auction house now operated from the building.
