The Newport Plaza Theatre was opened by Automated Theatres of America on July 5, 1970 with James Franciscus in “Beneath the Planet of the Apes” showing on both screens, presented on 16mm film. Cinema I had 334-seats and Cinema II had 327-seats and had a staff of 4 persons: a manager, a projectionist, a girl selling tickets and confectionary and a porter. Closed in 1970 the first time around? It was never an General Cinema location.
opening article This cinema was not advertised in the newspapers.
Reopened by General Cinema on August 11th, 1972. Grand opening ads posted.
It would appear that in between the December 1970 foreclosure on Automated Theatres, and the General Cinema takeover in August 1972, someone else did take over the theatre and reopened it on Wednesday, January 27, 1971, with CATCH-22 and ON A CLEAR DAY YOU CAN SEE FOREVER.
