L.L. Mumaw opened the imaginative-titled Moveo Theatre on April 30, 1919 in downtown Atoka, Oklahoma. Located in the existing J.L. Cook Building that was constructed in 1892, it had Motiograph DeLuxe projection and 350 seats. The Moveo opened April 30, 1919 with Sessue Hayakawa in “Bonds of Honor” supported. by Billy Rhodes in “The Lamb and the Lion.” The theatre’s tagline was, “Unburden your mind of business worry with a jolly evening of enjoyment at the Moveo.”
H.O. Jones took over the Moveo Theatre and dumped both its name and the tagline. It became the less imaginatively-title Washington Theatre launching April 15, 1920 with Irene Castle in “The Bohemian Girl”. The Washington Theatre closed as a silent house on January 19, 1930 with Ken Maynard in “California Mail” with several shorts.
The theatre re-emerged one final time later in 1930 as the Akota Theatre under the management of Glen Thompson Theatre Circuit. The theatre had been converted to sound films to remain viable. The Akota Theatre was essentially replaced in 1940 with the Thompson Theatre. The Cook Building was used for other purposes.
