On September 5, 1977, the Gateway Cinema closed as a single-screener and reopened as a twin as the “Gateway Twin Cinema” exactly a month later on October 5, 1977 with one of the screens demonstrating a special run engagement of Sean Connery in “The Molly Maguire’s” which was filmed there in Luzerne County.

The Gateway Twin Cinema ran as a twin throughout the rest of the 1970’s and continued into the first and second quarters of the 1980’s. Right when the first week of November 1984 arrived, another screen was added, reopening on November 9, 1984 as the “Gateway Cinemas III”. The capacities contain, with the largest being 350 and the smallest being 200 according to the Times-Leader.

In October 1989, 2 more screens were added bringing a total up to 5 screens, and was renamed “Gateway Cinema Center”.

This lasted until a 6th screen was added, naming “Gateway Cinemas 6” in October 2002.

Due to the expansion on megaplexes across the Wilkes-Barre and with the connection of the Movies 14 in Wilkes-Barre opening its doors, Gateway Cinemas manager Dan Jones had announced that a decision had declared, and closed all of its 6 screens for the final time on August 21, 2006. The theatre was then dark and abandoned for the rest of the year until February 2007 when it was converted into a commercial workspace.
