Silver Cinemas Circuit planned this 8-screen discount sub-run theatre in North Buffalo to open in 1989 in the Elmwood Commercial Center. Schedule delays pushed the opening back to December 13, 1991. The key for the 1,650 venue is that it didn’t have any nearby multiplex around it.
In 1997, just a day prior to the Super Saver 8’s sixth anniversary, Regal opened its Elmwood Center 16 megaplex. The mood at the Silver Cinemas wasn’t festive. In fact, Silver Cinemas went into a near free fall economic collapse along with many other theatre chains existing with aging multiplexes in an over-built megaplex marketplace.
On May 1, 2000, Silver Cinema laid off 160 workers and simultaneously closed 17 of its 49 locations - 15 of which were dollar house locations. Sadly, the Buffalo Super Saver location was one of them. “Rush Hour 2” was said to have been the last of the films on January 16, 2002.
The former theatre became a sports bar which subsequently went out of business. The majority of the Elmwood complex - along with the neighboring and historic Curtis-Wright aviation factory - was razed in favor of a Home Depot store and other retail structures. However, the Regal Elmwood Center continued operations into the 2020’s.
