The Del Rio Theatre was opened February 15, 1930. It reopened as the Plaza on September 20, 1949. It was mainly a Spanish language theater. It was still open in 1952, but had closed by 1955. The building was a victim of fire sometime in the 1960’s. It was never reopened, being turned into rental offices. A bakery and coffee shop occupies the lobby today.

This opened as the Del Rio theatre on February 15th, 1930 and reopened as the Plaza theatre on September 20th, 1949 and closed on November 9th, 1969.

Oddly, the 1951 and 1952 Yearbooks list this as the Del Rio, with the Plaza name being shown without a capacity. It does appear to have closed for a while (it’s not in the 1955 or ‘56 editions), but the 1959 Yearbook shows it as a Fox Inter-Mountain property.
I am wondering if the Del Rio might have been a reopening of the old Star Theatre, which vanished from the FDY after 1929? The Star was last listed with 300 seats, and the Del Rio first appeared in the 1931 edition with 360 seats. The Del Rio was listed as a Fox house from the beginning. The Star was last listed as owned by K&F Theatres of Denver, who were also running the Rio Grande in 1929. Fox probably took control of both of K&F’s Las Cruces houses at the same time. In the economic conditions of the period, would Fox have been more likely to build a new house or just gussie up an old one that was still serviceable?
That seems quite plausible. The Star listing is very vague. If we can determine for sure, I will delete that listing and combine it into this one.
