Leconfield Hall Cinema

In Petworth, a historic market town in West Sussex, it is thought that Leconfield Hall was built in 1793 on the site of a timber framed building.

By 1993 the Hall was in a very sorry state, both externally and internally, with the income from room hire far too low to undertake the works that were necessary.

Fortuitously, a legacy of £50,000 had just been received from the estate of the late Miss Gwenda Morgan, a Petworth resident, a fine and successful artist in wood engraving. While this could not cover all the work, it was very useful as ‘pump priming’ and led to a grant being received from English Heritage. This, in turn, led to other organisations and individuals coming forward.

The grand re-opening took place on 1st January 2000, although improvements have continued to be made, once again due to the generosity of a large number of benefactors and a major, £250,000 development project which took place in late-summer 2021.

The Hall has two main spaces. The downstairs area can be adapted for sales, exhibitions and meetings, accommodating around 150 people, or can be divided to provide a set of smaller rooms. Upstairs, there is a well equipped arts centre, with raked seating for 152 patrons. There is a “state-of-the-art projector and sound system” for public film screenings or for computer, video and DVD-based presentations. The seating can be retracted, providing a space for 188 for closely-seated events or dancing.

The upstairs cinema opened in September 2021 with the latest James Bond adventure, “No Time to Die”.
