Robert Guy “R.G.” Flanary opened his first Richlands theatre in 1912 as the Star Theatre which was rebuilt as the “new” Star Theatre in 1936 (which has its own page on Cinema Treasures). The first post-War venue carried his name when Robert Guy Flanary, Jr. launched the new-build Flanary Theatre on December 22, 1948. The Star Theatre and Flanary Theatre operated together in the late-1940’s and 1950’s.
On September 22, 1950, the Flanary family added Guy’s Drive-In for a three-theatre operation in town. Their’s was a hardtop Guy Theatre (aka Richlands Theatre) that had the patriarch’s name and closed with the Flanary Theatre’s launch.
The Flanary Theatre converted to widescreen projection to present CinemaScope films in the 1950’s. The popular venue appears to have been run for a period possibly by Robert Guy Flanary, III. The Flanary Theatre fulfilled a 30-year lease and would become home to a garage / tire shop.
