The original Star Theatre was opened by Robert Guy “R.G.” Flanary in 1912. He converted a livery stable into a motion picture house converting it to sound in 1930. He moved to a new-build Star Theatre in November of 1936 only to see it gutted by fire a year later.
Though advertised as a new theatre, Flanary either took an existing retail building or likely gutted the original Star Theatre and converted it to the Guys Theatre (sometimes Guy’s Theatre) opening December 1, 1939. The Guys Theatre may have had a very brief run as the Richlands Theatre. The 380-seat Guys Theatre venue co-existed with the “new” Star Theatre during World War II when they set some sort of record by conducting a scrap drive that brought in 40 tons of metal.
The Star Theatre was refreshed and expanded in 1945 but Flanary died the following year. Robert Guy Flanary, Jr. took on the Star Theatre and Guys Theatre drawing up plans for a new-build facility, the Flanary Theatre, in his dad’s honor. The Guys Theatre was dropped on December 21, 1948 with the Flanary Theatre opening the next day. The Star Theatre and Flanary Theatre operated together in the late-1940’s and 1950’s.
On September 22, 1950, the Flanary family added Guy’s Drive-In - also named for the original R.G. Flanary - for a three-theatre operation in town. The Star Theatre also received its final upgrade in 1950 and would be the first of the three to close. The other two theatres completed 30-year lease commitments also closing.
