Jet Drive-In

The September 16, 1953 issue of The Exhibitor reported, “The Jet Drive-In, formerly operated as the Cumberland Drive-In, held its formal opening near Fayetteville, N. C., on Highway 301. J. D. Hammett, Blacksburg, S. C., is the new manager, and R. C. Saunders is the owner. The drive-in was reconditioned for the opening.”

The 1955-56 Theatre Catalog listed the Jet Drive-In “(Formerly Cumberland)” in Fayetteville. Owner was R. C. Saunders, capacity was 196 cars. It had closed in the 1960’s.

Aerial photos showed a drive-in on what was then US 301 (later Alt 301) just south of town. Construction of Highway 87 obliterated the site, which was where the Gillespie Street ramps south of the freeway are today.

The Jet Drive-In closed sometime in the 1960s. Both its traces and the projection booth remained for decades until the 1990s.
