The Opera House was a rather grandiose name for Yates City’s theatre. It was a very basic tin-clad wood-frame structure dating to sometime before 1899. That year’s Sanborn shows it as buggy sales, with storage on the second floor.
By 1909, it had become an opera house, and by around 1914 movies were shown here. It continued in use until at least 1926. It is replaced in the 1927 listings by a ‘Paramount Theatre’, which may have been the same building.
All of the buildings on this block which are shown on the 1918 map have been demolished. This was located roughly under the current waterworks building, which looks like a small city hall/fire station from about 1940-50.
