Originally on this site stood a malt kiln, operated by brewer James Threfall. The Temperance Hall was opened on 5th July 1856.
In the summer of 1908 it was taken over by Hugh Rain (stage named Will Onda of the Onda Brothers acrobatic act). By 1917 it had been renamed Picture Palace. It had closed by 1926.
By 1959 it was in use as a showroom for Newera Fireplaces. It has since been demolished.
