Lion Drive-In

The Lion Drive-In appears to have opened in 1950 by W.N. Clark. Improvements occurred when Clark sold the venue to Mr. and Mrs. George B. and Fann Elam. Sr. in 1950. The Elam’s also operated the Avon Theatre and Princess Theatre hardtops in Winnsboro. The theatre was then refreshed again to allow for widescreen presentations including CinemaScope films.

Elam participated in a hearing on motion picture distribution trade practices that led to the Paramount decree in which the studios surrendered financial interest in movie theater exhibition. The Elams sold the Lion Drive-In in 1962 to Jack Pope. The Lion’s mane years of operation were in the 1950’s and 1960’s. The drive-in closed and has since been demolished.

A 1985 aerial shows the drive-in had been completely demolished with not a trace left. Today, it is private property with a single house in front.
