The Playhouse opened on May 27, 1972 with Liza Minnelli in “Cabaret”. It opened as a 600-seat, single-screen movie house. It complemented Aspen’s other historic theatre, the Isis Theatre.

The theatre was triplexed and acquired by Carmike Cinemas. It continued on showing first-run features until closing on May 12, 2006. It was demolished for a residential building.
