The six-screen Loews Cherry Tree Theatre was located west of Washington Square, opening on June 26, 1981 with the following in screen order: “For Your Eyes Only”, “The Great Muppet Caper”, “Dragon Slayer”, “Stripes”, “Swiss Family Robinson” and “Herbie Rides Again”, and “Force Five”. Four more screens were added in 1989, bringing a total to 10 screens.
Loews operated the Cherry Tree Theatre throughout most of its history except from November 1994 when the Sony Theatres rebrand took over the theatre until April 1999 when Loews returned back to the Cherry Tree Theatre.
Due to the lack of stadium seating and connection of the AMC Showplace 12 nearby, the Loews Cherry Tree Theatre closed for the final time on May 12, 2005.
Sitting abandoned for the rest of 2005, the theatre was then demolished in 2006. The area left without a single building until 2013, when a LA Fitness was built at the former theatres' site.

Loews Cineplex took over the Cherry Tree in October 1996, although showtimes from the Indianapolis Star continued to show the Cherry Tree being listed as a Sony theater into as late as April 1999.
