The Mechanics Institute was located in the city centre on Bridge Street. Built and opened in 1871, it was one of the first buildings in Bradford to screen films, when Mr. Richard J. Appleton demonstrated the screenings from 14th December 1896. On 2nd October 1908 the London Animated Picture Co. presented film of the “Olympic Games at the Stadium” & “The Franco-British Exhibition”. In May 1914 the “Clarendon Speaking Pictures” were presented by Hibberts to great success. Films continued to be screened here until at least 1915.
The building was demolished in 1976.
