Olympia Theatre

Located in the Hawthorne district in the south of the city center. The Olympia Theatre was opened in 1913 as a small 500-seat moving picture theatre set within a larger building. In 1922 it was closed by order of a fire marshal. It became the Palais Royal, a dance hall in 1925 and in 1927 it presented ‘modern’ vaudeville. It was enlarged in the 1930’s and became a boxing arena, which failed and it then became a furniture store. In 1977 plans were proposed for it to become a mini-mall, but these plans were never carried out and it was demolished. A fire house now stands on the site.
