In Sibiu, in the Transylvanian region of Romania, Cinema Arta has a long history in different buildings, having moved from Strada Faulurui in 1967 and Strada Tribunei at the beginning of the 1990’s (see separate Cinema Treasures entries).
After that second move, Cinema Arta became established within the Romanian-German University, where it re-opened in the 1990’s.
Unfortunately, by 2018, despite being the city’s only picture house, Cinema Arta had become rundown and was becoming unprofitable. It was duly closed on 21st June 2018.
However, Cinema Arta was saved when the Autonomous Directorate of Distribution and Exploitation of Films (Romania Film) launched a project aimed at refurbishing certain cinemas. So Cinema Arta was equipped with new 2D and 3D digital projection equipment and a Dolby sound system, and the auditorium and ancillary spaces were refurbished so that they complied “with all the necessary hygienic and sanitary norms”.
Cinema Arta re-opened on 18th September 2020 with director Christopher Nolan’s science-fiction action thriller “Tenet”.
