The Picture House was built by F.D. Cowieson & Co., well known portable building manufacturers. The foundations were laid and the building was constructed within eight weeks. The building had an outer cladding of corrugated iron. Shops were constructed on either side of the entrance and tea rooms were also provided. It had opened in May 1915 with 400-seats. By 1917 it had been renamed La Scala Picture House and the seating capacity had been increased to 600-seats.

It was destroyed by fire in May 1924.
