Wilkens Theatre

This small theatre appears on the 1911 Sanborn, in an old wooden storefront dating to before 1895, and shown on the 1900 map as a cigar factory. This was a very small space, and had an irregular layout, being narrower in the rear.

The theatre remained in operation through at least 1921, and that year’s map shows that the building had been substantially reconstructed (or perhaps replaced?). The theater was extended to the rear, and remained the same width.

The 1935 map shows this entire section of the block to be empty. Given the wooden structures packed closely together, there may well have been a fire. The site is now the western edge of a large bank building.

Note that the theatre’s historic address was 218, since numbers increased west to east, but that this was flipped at some point after 1935.
