The Playhouse Theatre opened 1929 and was used as a performing arts theatre for the “People Theatre” later known as “Erie Playhouse”. The Playhouse Theatre remained at this location for a good while until 1965 when this building was sold to Gannon University and the Erie Playhouse relocated to the former Penn Theatre in Wesleyville, Pennsylvania. Gannon quickly changed the theaters name to the Gannon College Theatre and then later on once again changed the name to Schuster Theatre. Schuster remained here until 1995 when they relocated to a new building at 620 Sassafras Street, this building was then quickly demolished and replaced with the Waldron Campus Center.
