This small town theater was opened by 1952. It was run by Harvey A. Moore, who later worked for the Central States Theater Corp. He seems to have come to town to open the theater after working in construction.

The theater building is a buff brick structure with some glass block next to the door. At least toward the end of its run, the library was located upstairs, and when the theater closed in 1978, they moved into the main floor. It was likely at this point that the marquee was replaced by the current tacky plywood awning. It’s unknown how much of the interior survives, but the checkout desk is located in the old lobby/concession area.

There was a lengthy article in the June 30, 1951 issue of Boxoffice about the grass-roots effort to build what would become the Garwood. “By selling shares last September in a cooperative venture, nearly 150 Garnavillo residents and nearby farmers now own a piece of a theatre that will eventually cost an estimated $20,000 to $25,000.” The town hoped to open the theater by late summer 1951.
