The 601-seat Famous Players Avalon Mall Theatre opened in the west side of Avalon Mall behind the Solby’s supermarket on April 27th, 1967 with James Coburn in “In Like Flint”. It expanded to four screens on May 21st, 1976 as the first multiplex cinema in Atlantic Canada. In 1984 it became part of Empire Theatres who split up the 578-seat cinema into two bowling alley smaller screens in the early-1990’s and closed in 1999 when newer cinemas opened in the north end of the mall upstairs.
