The Warner Mycal Cinemas Ebina opened its doors on April 24, 1993 featuring a total of 7 screens and an original capacity of 1,874 seats in total. At the time of its opening, it had cutting-edge specifications, but was remodeled a lot over the years.
Although the theatre was located in the outskirts of the Kanto Region and about 26 miles southwest of Tokyo, it was one of Japan’s most popular movie houses in the entire country period (for many reasons).
The Warner Mycal Cinemas Ebina is generally considered to be Japan’s first multiplex cinema, and the first movie theatre in Japan to have installations of both Dolby Digital and THX sound.
After the Warner chain became part of the Avon chain, it was renamed the Avon Cinema Ebina on July 1, 2013.
The theatre formerly used to have two THX auditoriums during its early heyday (Screens 5 and 7), but was downgraded to one auditorium, which is just Screen 7 only, after a majority of seats were upgraded on February 28, 2021. The upgrade have patrons approximately 1.5 times more spacious and have partitions. The upgrade also eventually downgrade its capacity of seats from 1,874 to 1,713 (with one wheelchair in each auditorium).
Screen 7 was the largest with 433 seats and indeed was the main original auditorium for THX sound, while the other auditoriums have the ranging capacities of 112 to 333 seats.
