The Mazda Theatre was a downtown Norwood silent movie house. The venue changed names to the Norwood Theatre and moved into the Turner Building to accommodate larger audiences in 1928. Pines Maner played piano to accompany the silent films and ran the projector before moving on to publish the “Norwood News” newspaper. The Norwood Theatre equipped for sound to remain commercially viable in its new home.

In 1941, G.C. Kittrel from Florida purchased the Norwood Theatre and the Roxy Theatre in Albemarle. Kitrell gave the Norwood Theatre a Streamline Moderne style makeover in 1943. R.A. Goodman took on the Norwood Theatre and the Mae Theatre in Oakboro, less than 15 miles away. He also built the Highway 27 Drive-In in Locust Level in 1948.

Advertisements for the Norwood Theatre were discontinued following the June 6, 1959 showing of “The Shaggy Dog”. The Norwood Theatre reappears in regular advertising beginning on May 18, 1966 when it is used for live country music for shows under the Carolina Jamboree nameplate. Before year’s end, those shows were rescheduled for the Alameda Theatre in Albemarle. It doesn’t appear as though the Norwood Theatre was used again. The auditorium has been demolished, but the facade remains.
