The West End Theatre was Martinsville’s second theater catering to African-American audiences following the Baldwin / Rex Baldwin / Rex Theatre. The venue opened on December 26, 1949 with Humphrey Bogart in “Key Largo”. It appears to have closed at what was likely an opt-out point in its lease at the 15-year mark on December 7, 1964 with Jerry Lewis in “Who’s Minding the Store” and John Wayne in “Hatari.” It soon becomes home to St. Hope Temple and has served as a home for religious organizations into the 2020’s.
