The Royal Theatre opened January 27, 1936 in the Wade Building by Duffy and Francis Wade. The theatre was most likely named after their grandmother, Sarah Royal Wade but could have been named after her husband, Dr. Ben Royal. The opening film was “Splendor” starring Miriam Hopkins. The theatre co-exited with the Wade Theatre on the same block.
The $10,000 Royal Theatre was designed by Frank Whitaker Benton, an architect from Wilson, North Carolina, and built by E.F. Gillett Wilson. The Everett Enterprises Circuit bought out the Royal Theatre Company’s holdings including the Wade Theatre and Royal Theatre. The Royal Theatre closed permanently on February 9, 1951 with “Where the Sidewalk Ends”. All equipment was offered for sale quickly thereafter and the former theatre was converted to a retail dress shop. The Wade Building still stands in downtown Morehead City in the 2020’s.
