Lincoln Theatre, Portland, Oregons 1920s

The Lincoln Theatre was built on the southeast corner of Southwest 3rd Avenue and Lincoln Street in Portland, Oregon. In the 1920’s it was acquired by the Berg family, who operated it along with the nearby Grant Theatre and Kearney Theatre, as well as the Sunnyside Theatre on East Belmont. They lost possession of their theatres during the Great Depression.

The Lincoln Theatre made the transition to sound and operated through to the 1950’s. The last known newspaper advertisement for the theatre ran April 20, 1954, for the double feature Bob Hope in “Here Come the Girls" and Robert Stack in “Sabre Jet".

By 1957 the building was being used by Allied Productions, Inc, which built parade floats and created stage sets, including exhibits for the 1959 Oregon Centennial.

The entire block, as well as the surrounding area, was demolished during Portland’s urban renewal program in the 1960’s. Today the site is occupied by the parking lot of the University Place Hotel and Conference Center.

Some new aerial photos from 1938 have come to light, showing this theater on the southwest corner of 3rd Avenue and Lincoln Street. They have been added to the photos. This means the entrance to this theater would have had a 3rd Avenue street address.
