The Southeast Cinema Corporation launched Hammond’s second luxury twin when it opened the University Cinema Twin I & II on March 1, 1974. The opening features were Robert Redford in “The Way We Were” and Gene Hackman in “The Poseidon Adventure.” A year later Gulf States, which had built the first Twin Cinema in Hammond at the Town & Country Plaza, took over the operation of the University Cinema effective on February 21, 1975.
The biggest hit for the University Cinema was in 1977 when it showed “Star Wars”. Students from Southeast Louisiana University across the street were among the repeat customers. In 1982, Gulf States Theaters were targeted for allegedly not using union projectionists and vandals slashed the theatre screens at the University Cinema. It appears to have lasted into the 1990’s before closing permanently.
