On March 1, 1913, the Los Angeles Times reported “A photoplay theatre has been opened here (February 28) by Alfred Fielder formerly of Anaheim. A record crowd witnessed the opening show.” The same story was printed in Motography on April 5, 1913.
Sanborn Maps 1917 listed ”Moving Pic”, which would be approximately at today’s 134 Richmond Street. On March 11, 1919, the Los Angeles Times reported a fire yesterday destroyed seven buildings on the east side of Richmond Avenue and the motion picture theatre was saved.
The theatre was missing on the 1929 maps, with the lot blank. Located three lots north was a new theatre, presumably the first El Segundo Theatre, now the Old Town Music Hall.
Ward C. Henderson writing in the El Segundo Herald October 17, 1991, remembered things differently. He noted his grandfather Alfred Fielder opened El Segundo’s first theatre in 1912 on the south side of Grand Avenue midway between Richmond Street and Main Street. Mr. Henderson’s mother was the piano player, but Alfred Fielder passed away on July 29, 1913, at the age of 51 and the theatre closed.
