Village Cinemas Sylvania was completed in 1983, following the renovation of the nearby Southgate shopping centre.
After a sod-turning ceremony by film historian and local resident Bill Collins, the complex was officially opened in December 1983 by NSW Premier Neville Wran, with the James Bond film “Never Say Never Again” (1983) as its opening feature.
The three-screen complex was not only one of the region’s first multi-screen cinemas, but a rare opportunity for residents of the Sutherland Shire to enjoy first run films at a time when most debuted at inner city cinemas. In some cases, such as “The Right Stuff” (1983), films were presented in 70mm.
A modern crystal chandelier comprising hundreds of glass rods was a notable feature of its lobby.
After the 1992 renovation of the nearby Westfield Miranda shopping centre, which included the installation of an eight-screen Greater Union cineplex, the Sylvania complex suffered a decline in patronage, eventually closing in 1993.
The building still exists but has been repurposed as a gym.
