Built in the late-1800’s. In the 1910’s the Opera House was taken over by Benjamin T. Pitts. It was still open in 1929, but had closed by 1930, possibly due to the opening of the Colonial Theatre by Benjamin Pitts in February 1929. It was converted into a Woolworths store.
In July 1960 the Woolworths store was the scene of sit-ins by 20 high school students at the drug store lunch counter, protesting the rights of African Americans to use the building. They succeeded on July 30, 1960 when African Americans were served there for the very first time.
The building is now an antique mall.
