Ever since opening as the Teikoku-kan on August 11, 1922, it went through a variety of names including the Yomiuri-kaikan, Tamon-kaikan, and Shinko-eiga-gekijo until the theater officially became a Toho house in 1938, and was renamed the Sendai Toho Eiga-gakijo. Unfortunately the building was completely burned down during the Sendai Air Raid on July 10, 1945.
It was quickly rebuilt, and reopened as the Toho Mitsukoshi Theater on January 17, 1946 on the 5th floor of the Sendai Mitsukoshi at Higashi Ichiban-cho, but in October 1954, the theater changes its name to “Sendai Toho Theater” and was relocated to 17 Higashi Goban- cho.
The Sendai Toho Theater was relocated again to the Toho Sendai Building and reopened its doors again in March 1963 on the 6th floor of the building. The main auditorium features 70mm projection and later added Dolby Digital and DTS sound systems. In March 1986, a second auditorium was added on the 8th floor featuring installations of Dolby Stereo.
Unfortunately due to the popularity of nearby multiplexes, the Sendai Toho became a victim. The Sendai Toho closed for the final time on February 26, 2006 and was immediately demolished afterward. The theater last operated with 658 seats, with 588 seats in Screen 1 and 70 seats in Screen 2.
