Central Cinema

The Scioto Cinema opened its doors by Cinecom on March 31, 1971 with Walter Matthau in “The New Leaf”. Despite being owned by Cinecom, its first manager was Joe Humphreys who was also a disc jockey for local radio station WBEX as well as two years at WLMJ in Jackson (now defunct). Humphreys didn’t last long as the theater manager, as it was taken over by Mrs. Marjorie Blake a short time later.

Unfortunately the Scioto name didn’t last long. The theater ended up closing unexpectedly on January 18, 1973 with Julie Andrews in “Thoroughly Modern Millie” due to the chain being no longer a profit following the Cinecom chain found guilty of displaying obscene material. After a short closure, the theater was purchased by Majestic and Adena Theatre operator Harley Bennett, and the theater was eventually remodeled. The theater was then renamed the Central Cinema, and the theater reopened its doors on August 15, 1973 with Yul Brynner in “Westworld”.

The Central Cinema did had a successful 14-year run, but during its final days of operation, the theater rarely saw success. The Central Cinema closed for the final time on April 30, 1987 with “Star Trek IV - The Voyage Home”, due to the theater being beaten out by the Majestic Theatre and the Cinema 6.
