Located in the East Auckland suburb of Howick, the La Scala Cinema opened in 1929. In December 1930 it was renamed the Monterey Cinema.
In 1983 it was acquired by Kerridge Odeon and Amalgamated Theatres, but it was in a dilapidated state and it was closed in 1993.
The building was damaged by fire in 1998, but apparently still stands, albeit in a heavily altered state, at the junction of Picton Street and Cook Street.
The historic photograph of the Monterey Cinema is on display at its successor, the five-screen Monterey Cinemas, which opened on a different site in 2011 (and has its own entry on Cinema Treasures).
