Located in the south of the City Centre, just off Karangahape Road. The Kings Theatre was opened on 28th November 1910 as a live theatre. It was built for John Fuller and was designed by Auckland based architect Edward Bartley. In 1926 it went over to cinema use and was renamed Prince Edward Theatre. A new entrance was built on Karangahape Road. It was taken over by Kerridge-Odeon and renamed Playhouse Theatre which closed as a cinema in 1967.
It was renamed Mercury Theatre in 1968 returning to use as a live theatre housing the Mercury Theatre Company. It remained a live theatre until 1992. On 13th December 1990 it was listed as a Category II heritage building. The ‘new’ entrance on Karangahape Road was named the Norman NG Buildings and still has a faded ‘Fullers’ name. It is no longer in use by the theatre and today is an Indian restaurant.
In the early-2000’s it was purchased by the Equippers Church. In April 2022 the building was closed to allow work to be carried out to strengthen the building and bring it up to earthquake safety code. Plans were to complete this by the end of 2024.
