Event Cinemas Palmerston

In central Palmerston North, the seat of the Manawatū-Whanganui region, located in the eastern Manawatu Plains in the North Island, land was acquired in 1985 for the construction of the Downtown on Broadway shopping and leisure complex.

This included a multi-screen cinema, the Downtown Cinemas. With six screens, this opened in 1990, and was the country’s first multiplex.

In 2008, during major refurbishment and reconstruction works in the complex, the cinema was acquired by Cinema Gold, who added two extra screens and renamed it accordingly.

In September 2015 the Cinema Gold circuit was acquired by Event Cinemas, and once again renamed.

Seating capacities are: 156, 90, 284, 130, 82, 104, 153 and 141 (screen numbering not known). The cinema is at first floor level. There is an unusually large foyer, with the screens accessed on both sides.
