In Taihape, a small town in the Rangitikei District of the North Island, the Majestic Theatre is the second movie house to occupy this site, the first was the Kings Theatre built in 1912 but then burning down in 1916.
The present cinema was duly opened in 1917, again as the King’s Theatre, with 600 seats. (The date is still visible, high on the façade.)
A change of ownership in July 1929 led to the name being changed to the Majestic Theatre and operation passed over to Kerridge-Odeon
The Majestic Theatre was closed around 1990, and the building was threatened with demolition. However, the community rallied round, a petition was launched by the Majestic Rescue Group and funding was secured.
This led to an innovative project, initiated by the Taihape Youth Enterprise Scheme between 1992 and 1994, whereby senior students from Taihape College re-opened the cinema, and managed it for just over a year.
The Majestic Theatre is now managed by the Taihape Heritage Trust.
The building was granted Historic Place Category 2 status on 8th August 1998.
