Located on a short side-street off the Rue de la Republique. The Capitole was opened on 19th November 1932 with Marie Glory in “Monsieur, Madame et Bibi”. It had a seating capacity of 1,750-seats in orchestra and balcony levels. In the early years several live acts appeared on the stage prior to the main feature film. On 9th September 1941 the cinema was destroyed by fire, with only the facade remaining.
It was rebuilt and reopened with 1,500-seats on 10th June 1943 with Renee St. Cyr in “La Femme Perdue” (The Lost Woman). Fernandel was the first artist to appear on the stage. In January 1946 artists who appeared on the stage include Yves Montand, Edith Piaf & Fernandel. It was renovated in 1949 and in August 1953 it was modernized.
In 1971 it was converted into a 3-screen cinema, with the balcony (screen 1) having 880-seats and screens 2 & 3 in the former orchestra having 334-seats and 156-seats. When the Pathe Cap-Sud multiplex opened in 1995, the Capitole began loosing patrons and it was eventually closed on 19th November 2013.
It was reopened in September 2015 as Pandora, a multi use entertainment venue, screening films, live performances and temporary exhibitions. It closed abruptly in 2019. It stood unused for three years unto 2021 when it reopened as the Capitole, presenting live shows.
