The King River Life magazine reported the Jansen Opera house was opened in 1903 by Jesse Jansen. The Jansen Opera House is shown on Sanborn Maps 1907 and listed in American Motion Picture Directory 1914-1915.
A Reedley Exponent advertisement on October 2, 1919, reported the building known as the Jansen Opera House was now Sanders Bros. Garage.
The opera house was part of a larger building spanning a half a block and was said to have a basement for dressing rooms and storage. After being used over the years for a variety of retail operation, the building was restored in 1984 and today it is home to the River City Theatre Company.
The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984, which notes the building was designed by Jesse Jansen.
