The Gem Theatre opened its doors on September 7, 1909, and was still operating into World War II, when, due to a January 11, 1942 fire that destroyed the Joy Theatre, that business was transferred to the Gem Theatre until the Joy Theatre was rebuilt. The Gem Theatre was closed in 1957.
