Cozy Theatre

This large theatre opened in 1938. It was located on the site of a large garage which had been demolished by 1935, perhaps in preparation for construction of this building. The Cozy Theatre was constructed by Joe Lenski of Pittsburg, KS, who may also have been the architect.

The facade is a striking orange brick Art Deco style design with cast concrete ornamentation. The theatre originally was listed with 600 seats, but was expanded sometime after 1947. The theatre is still listed in 1957. According to the KS Historical Resources website, the Cozy Theatre burned in the 1950’s.

Today only the first 20 feet or so of the building survives. The ground floor has some rather unattractive storefronts installed, and a large shingle awning hangs over them. The area where the auditorium was is a parking lot.
