Hodges Moss of Hodges Grocery opened the Mossland Theatre across the street from the Louisville and Nashville or L. & N. Depot in downtown Greensburg on January 19, 1934 with “Monk and Sam” with both personalities making a personal appearance. Apparently, sound was a major issue and the theater was refreshed with a new sound system in April of that same year. The theatre had replaced the Walter Bowen’s Bowen Theatre (formerly the Workman Theatre), the first sound era venue in town.

On February 19, 1944, fire originating in the Mossland just prior to the doors opening destroyed the venue and three neighboring buildings. Andy Anderson of Photoplay Theatres of Kentucky was given wartime permission to construct a new theater. Due to wartime shortages, that didn’t open until July 25, 1946 as the Franklin Theatre.
