Downtown Springfield’s Majestic Theatre was its sound-era focal point for moviegoers. The Majestic Theatre replaced the silent-era Masonic Theatre which was housed in the fraternal lodge. The Majestic Theatre opened August 30, 1929 with Richard Barthelmess in “The Patent Leather Kid” likely on a 30-year leasing agreement.

The Majestic Theatre seated 350 with a balcony for African America patrons. It felt it had a superior sound system and advertised heavily both in Springfield and nearby Lebanon, about nine miles away. R.H. “Bubba” Robertson appears to have closed the venue in 1959 at the end of its lease. It was converted into a First & Peoples Bank in 1961. The building was demolished in 2007/2008.

It looks like the theatre building was at 108 E. Main Street. The theatre was redesigned to be part of the neighboring First & Peoples Bank in 1961. Both buildings were reportedly demolished in 2007/8 to make way for a new judicial court building.
