Located in the 14th District in Budapest, construction began on the Sugár Shopping Centre in 1975. In the event the work progressed rather slowly, and the centre did not open until 7th November 1980. At that time, there was no cinema included.
(Despite its apparently English spelling, in Hungarian “Sugár” means “Beam”, as in a beam of light.)
In order that the centre could compete with the more recent neighbouring malls, a major renovation took place in 2005 and 2006. This included a four-screen cinema on the second floor, which opened on 22nd March 2006.
This proved so successful that a further auditorium was added in November 2009, then two more in June 2010, one in November 2011 and another in August 2017, all on the second floor.
Initially, the auditoriums were simply designated “A”, “B”, “C”, etc. However, in a nice touch, said to be as a result of “market research”, they were given the names of famous film directors: Screen A (“Spielberg”): 392 seats; Screen B (“Bergman”): 117 seats; Screen C (“Coppola”): 117 seats; Screen D (“Fellini”): 157 seats; Screen E (“Bacsó” [Hungarian director Péter Bacsó]): 48 seats; Screen F (“Godard”): 46 seats; Screen G (“Hitchcock”): 42 seats; Screen H (“Bujtor” [Hungarian director István Bujtor]): 51 seats and Screen I (“Tarantino”): 50 seats.
The “Fellini” screen was the first to be converted to digital projection, in October 2009. By 2017 the cinema was a fully digital operation, which replaced the 35mm Kinoton FP 50A projectors. The “Coppola” and “Fellini” screens are equipped with 3D technology.
