Located on W. 42nd Street, between 8th Avenue and 9th Avenue, on what today is known as Theatre Row, due to the number of Off-Broadway theatres. The Theatre Row Building was opened on May 13, 1978, a project of the 42nd Street Development Corporation, which was set up to ‘clean-up’ W. 42nd Street of its sleazy image. The already existing building was redesigned by architect Hugh Hardy & architectural firm SLCE Architects. There are 5 theatres inside the building: Acorn Theatre which has 199-seats, the Clurman Theatre, the Becket Theatre and the Kirk Theatre each with 99-seats, and the Lion Theatre with 88-seats.
Back in 2004, the Clurman Theatre (named after Harold Clurman) was converted into a 199-seat independent cinema named Emerging Cinema. It was a short-lived venture.
On June 17, 2019 the Theatre Row Building reopened following a renovation to the plans of architect Marta Sander of Architecture Outfit.
