Lyric Theatre

Originally constructed sometime between 1884 and 1889 as two tiny one story wooden storefronts, by 1899 the structure had been converted to a hardware store, and greatly expanded by the addition of a two story tin shop and warehouse to the rear. This is still shown on the 1909 map.

The rear structure made an ideal space for a rough and ready conversion into an early cinema. The Lyric Theatre was operating here from 1910.

The theatre was closed in 1922 and was demolished to allow the construction of the Irwin Savings & Trust building, which still exists.

The November 4, 1922 issue of Moving Picture World had this item about the end (and the beginning) of the Lyric Theatre at Irwin: “The Lyric Theatre, Irwin, Pa., which has been in continuous operation for twelve years, has closed its doors forever. The house is being dismantled and being remodeled into a storeroom, having been condemned some time ago.
