The Theatre Yokohama opened its doors on April 20, 1955 with Ray Milland in “Dial M For Murder”. During its later years, the theater changed its name to Yokohama New Theatre in July 1972 after new management took over the theater as well as the theater being a secondary-affiliate for Shochiku screening its foreign films. At its peak, there were five Shochiku operated theaters in the Isezakicho area of Yokohama.
During the 1990s, the Yokohama New Theatre became an affiliate with Toho, screening films that came from the Tokyo Theater, but after the popular Shochiku Central in Tokyo closed in 1999 as well as the Tokyo Theater began showing Tokyu foreign films, the Yokohama New Theatre began showing more documentary films.
The Yokohama New Theatre closed for the final time on June 1, 2018 because of concerns over the owner’s health.
